SEATTLE – The Uncommitted WA campaign made history when Uncommitted Delegates received nearly 90,000 votes statewide, earning almost 10% of the Democratic vote in the Washington State presidential primary. With 25,950 votes for Uncommitted Delegates in King County, the campaign earned 16.33% of the vote in Congressional District 7, gaining them two Uncommitted delegates for the Democratic National Convention in Chicago in August.
Rami Al-Kabra, spokesperson for Uncommitted Washington and the only Palestinian-American elected official in Washington State, had this to say:
“Washington has proven that even in one of the bluest states in the country, there is deep discontent among Democrats with President Biden’s unconditional support for Israel’s war and disregard for basic human rights.
We were able to gain two uncommitted delegates with only two weeks of work and a shoestring budget, and we are not slowing down. We will continue to advocate for Palestinian rights and Palestinian life at the Democratic National Convention and all the way through November. The results are great, but we don’t feel like we can truly celebrate while our tax dollars indiscriminately kill thousands of innocent people and traumatize millions more. Until this stops, our work isn’t over.”
Faheem Khan, President of the American Muslim Advancement Council and a lead organizer with Uncommitted WA, said:
“This outcome surpassed all of our goals. We earned more than 7 times more votes than expected. With only $20,000 to spend statewide and just 8 days to reach voters, we received the second highest number of Uncommitted votes in the nation. We also managed to do what several states before us didn’t: earn Uncommitted delegates to speak up for our values at the National Convention. Nearly 90,000 Washington voters agree: a more peaceful and just world is possible. 50% of Democratic voters didn’t support the war in Gaza as early as January—the number has certainly gone up since. Biden is risking his second term and our democracy by continuing to support the kind of violence and cruelty that is being perpetrated in Gaza right now.”
